Two home/school tasks for Nursery and Reception.
Lids
Collect about 5 containers – all different and all with lids – and you need a bag l(ike a PE-bag or a gift bag) that you can’t see through.
Hide all the lids in the feely-bag.
Take it in turns to feel inside the bag.
Encourage the 'feeler' to describe the shape of the lid they hold.
Swap roles.
By feel, can you find the correct lids to fit each container?
How sure are you? How do you know it is the correct lid?
How can you be sure the lid will fit?
Now can a partner point to the matching container from your description of a lid?
Another idea... Can you make a cardboard lid to fit a container that doesn’t have one?
Sponges
(Image from ATM Mathematics (2017) Exploring mathematics with younger children. Derby:ATM
Collect some sponges of various sizes, shapes and textures.
Investigate which sponge holds the most water.
Discuss how you might find out and how you might measure the water.
Try with a collection of cloths.
Does a bigger cloth always hold more water?
I hope you and your children enjoy and engage in rich maths discussions from playing with these maths tasks... I always begin any task by asking: "What do you notice?"
Find more tasks in my other short blogs.
Feedback always appreciated, either here or on Twitter.
